GIVING STORIES

Al’s Story

Al Allen won’t hesitate to tell you about the car accident that brought him to The Virginia Home.

It involved two young men, a Datsun 280Z and a time long before seat belts were mandatory.

Prior to his accident, Al was pursuing his career as a recently graduated physics major from The College of William and Mary. He enjoyed working on various assignments, one of which involved writing an accounting system for NASA to track satellite packages placed into orbit!

But at age twenty-eight, Al’s life changed forever.

He’s not sure where he’d be if the accident had not happened, but he is sure of one thing – The Virginia Home gave him a new lease on life, and was a place he could call home from day one. That was fifteen years ago.

You are the one making this kind of life possible for Al Allen and 129 other residents.  Al may be The Home’s only rocket scientist, but he shares his sentiments with so many of our residents — because The Virginia Home isn’t just a place where people with physical disabilities live.  It’s where they have a life.
