The Virginia Home Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Campus in Hanover County

Serving adults with physical disabilities, the new home will provide residents with greater independence and grow capacity
Richmond, Va., November 18, 2025: The Virginia Home, a 501(c)3 care community for adults living with irreversible physical disabilities, today broke ground on its 70-acre, state-of-the-art campus in Hanover County. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2027.
The only facility of its kind in the Commonwealth, The Virginia Home serves 130 residents in its current location overlooking Byrd Park. The new campus – which will be located at the intersection of I-295, Pole Green Road and Bell Creek Road in Hanover County – will be home to 160 full-time residents, initially increasing capacity by more than 20%, with the potential for future growth.
“Today’s groundbreaking is a significant milestone in the evolution of The Virginia Home,” said Douglas Vaughan Jr., The Virginia Home President and CEO. “This celebrates the donors, the volunteer leaders and the community that are helping us make our new campus a reality. Today reaffirms our promise to meet the growing needs of serving our residents with compassion and dignity.”
Designed by architecture firm Baskervill with input from Trustees working with experts, including medical, nursing, therapy, dietary and social work professionals as well as The Home’s chaplain, the new facility will integrate advanced technology and design to improve safety, independence and operational efficiency for residents and the care team.
The one-story facility will feature spacious, light-filled resident rooms that grow from 164 gross square feet (GSF) at the current facility to 274 (GSF), with scenic outdoor views and modern semi-private bathrooms, as well as more individual storage. Wider hallways and adaptive design elements will remove barriers to mobility.
The new campus will enable The Virginia Home to launch its first-ever, comprehensive day program serving 60 participants. This program will benefit families while on the waiting list for a residential opening as well as individuals who do not require full-time care, allowing for more members of the community to be served.
“Our beautiful new building will be full of up-to-date technology, natural light and the people that we love,” said Laura Stewart, Board of Trustees Chair. “We’ll have gathering spaces inside and out, and we’ll open our doors to a day program that will provide a safe and welcoming community for those who are looking for respite, fun and social activities for a few hours a day.”
With the future already in mind, the site will set the stage for additional housing options such as multi-person cottages for residents able to live more independently.
