The Virginia Home Announces Plans to Build New, $128M Campus in Hanover

Serving adults living with irreversible physical disabilities, the state-of-the-art location will support greater independence and dignity, grow capacity

Richmond, Va., January 30, 2025: The Virginia Home, a 501(c)(3) care community for adults living with irreversible physical disabilities, today announced plans to build a new, state-of-the-art campus in Hanover County, expanding its ability to serve current and future residents. The only facility of its kind in the commonwealth, The Virginia Home houses 130 residents in its current location overlooking Byrd Park. The new location will be home to 160 full-time residents— initially increasing capacity by more than 20%, with the potential for future growth. For The Virginia Home, these exciting plans represent a significant step forward to meeting care needs for residents and supporting caregivers and families.

“Since 1894, we’ve had one dream at The Virginia Home—to create a richer life for adult Virginians with irreversible physical disabilities. Now, our dreams quite literally need a bigger home,” said Douglas Vaughan Jr., President and CEO, The Virginia Home. “The new campus will not only allow us to welcome more individuals and families into our community, but it will also feature beautiful, modern design and technology that supports greater independence, dignity and comfort for everyone we serve.”

The state-of-the-art, $128 million facility will modernize The Virginia Home, integrating advanced technology and design to improve safety, independence and operational efficiency for residents and the care team. It incorporates best practice improvements from trusted experts, including medical, nursing, therapy, dietary and social work professionals and The Home’s chaplain.

Multiple courtyards are planned in the new facility

For residents, families, and staff, the new facility also will be a beautiful, inviting place to live, visit, and spend time. All rooms will be designed to feature scenic outdoor views, abundant natural light, and a comfortable environment. In addition to eliminating the need to navigate elevators and stairs, the new facility will enhance quality of life with larger resident rooms, increasing from 164 gross square feet (GSF) in the current facility to 250 GSF.

It also will support resident dignity and safety with updates such as technology designed for greater self-sufficiency and new, smaller bathroom configurations with more individual storage, replacing the current congregate model.

The Virginia Home also will be able to launch its long-awaited, comprehensive day program in the new facility. It will accommodate 55-60 participants, serving any families still on the waiting list for a residential opening as well as individuals who do not require full-time care.

The new facility will be located on a 70-acre campus off I-295 in Hanover County. The site provides The Virginia Home with space to accommodate the outdoor needs of residents as well as long-term residential growth. Future expansions could include additional housing options, such as multi-person cottages for residents able to live more independently.
